The Evolution of Spanish

From Vulgar Latin to modern Spanish, the language has undergone profound transformations:

  • From Latin to Castilian: Vulgar Latin spoken in the Iberian Peninsula evolved with distinctive phonetic changes (initial f- → h-: *filium* → *hijo*)
  • Arabic influence: eight centuries of Arab presence bequeathed approximately 4,000 Arabic loanwords (*almohada*, *azúcar*, *alcalde*, *ojalá*)
  • Iberian and Celtic substratum: pre-Roman languages left traces in toponymy and vocabulary
  • Colonial expansion: Spanish was enriched by indigenous loanwords (*chocolate*, *tomate*, *canoa*) and developed American variants
  • Americanisms: Latin American varieties created their own lexical and grammatical innovations
  • Modern evolution: anglicisms (*marketing*, *software*) and technological neologisms constantly transform the language
  • The RAE: the Royal Spanish Academy attempts to regulate evolution while accepting natural changes
