Advanced prepositional verbs in Spanish function much like English phrasal verbs: the meaning shifts dramatically depending on the preposition attached. For instance, "dar con" means "to come across" something unexpectedly, while "dar por" means "to consider as" (Lo dieron por perdido — They considered him lost). The distinction between separable and inseparable verbs matters greatly. With "sacar a relucir" (to bring to light), the components stay together: Sacó a relucir viejos problemas (He brought up old problems). Meanwhile, "contar con" (to count on) always requires "con": Cuento con tu apoyo (I count on your support). "Hacerse cargo de" implies assuming responsibility: Me hice cargo de la situación (I took charge of the situation). "Echar en falta" means to miss or notice the absence of something: Echo en falta los viejos tiempos (I miss the old times). Mastering these combinations is essential for achieving natural C1-level fluency.
