Humor and irony in Spanish
Spanish humor often relies on sarcasm, litotes, and euphemisms. Mastering these figures of speech enriches your expression.
- Litotes says less to mean more:
*No está mal.* — It's not bad. (= It's quite good)
- Euphemism softens reality:
*Es de la tercera edad.* — He's of the third age. (= He's old)
- Sarcasm says the opposite of what you mean:
*¡Qué puntual eres!* (to someone late) — How punctual you are!
- Humorous exaggeration:
*Me lo has dicho un millón de veces.* — You've told me a million times.
Intonation plays a crucial role: the same sentence can be sincere or sarcastic depending on the tone. In Spanish, dry humor (*humor seco*) is highly appreciated.
