"Ir a + infinitive" (the near future)

In Spanish, to talk about plans and future intentions, we use ir a + infinitive. This is the easiest way to express the future at A2 level.

The verb ir conjugates like this in the present tense:

  • Yo voy → I go / I am going
  • Tú vas → You go / You are going
  • Él/Ella va → He/She goes
  • Nosotros vamos → We go
  • Ellos/Ellas van → They go

Example: "Voy a reservar un hotel." → "I am going to book a hotel."

Example: "Vamos a viajar a España." → "We are going to travel to Spain."

How to build a sentence

The structure is always: subject + ir (conjugated) + a + infinitive

Example: "¿Vas a hacer la maleta?" → "Are you going to pack?"

Example: "Ella va a comprar los billetes." → "She is going to buy the tickets."

Futuro próximo vs futuro simple

At A2 level, ir a + infinitive (futuro próximo) is much more common in conversation than the futuro simple. Use it for concrete plans and near-future intentions.

Example: "Mañana voy a visitar el museo." → "Tomorrow I am going to visit the museum."

자주 하는 실수

  • Voy reservar un hotel
    Voy a reservar un hotel

The preposition a is required between ir and the infinitive.

  • Voy a reservo un vuelo
    Voy a reservar un vuelo

The second verb must stay in the infinitive form, not conjugated.

  • Necesito hacer el maleta
    Necesito hacer la maleta

Maleta is feminine: la maleta, not el maleta.

  • Vamos a viajamos a España
    Vamos a viajar a España

Do not conjugate both verbs. Only ir is conjugated; the second stays as infinitive.

  • Yo vo a comprar billetes
    Yo voy a comprar billetes

The first person of ir is voy, not vo.
