Temporal Connectors — Telling a Story

When narrating events in the past, you need connectors to link actions in order. These words give your story structure and flow.

Sequence Connectors

Use these to order events chronologically:

Primero desayuné. → First I had breakfast.
Luego salí de casa. → Then I left the house.
Después fui al trabajo. → After that I went to work.
Más tarde comí con mi amigo. → Later I ate with my friend.
Al final volví a casa. → In the end I went back home.

Surprise and Contrast

De repente empezó a llover. → Suddenly it started raining.
Mientras caminaba, vi a un amigo. → While I was walking, I saw a friend.
Entonces decidí tomar un taxi. → So I decided to take a taxi.

Before and Finally

Antes de salir, llamé a mi madre. → Before leaving, I called my mother.
Por fin llegamos al hotel. → We finally arrived at the hotel.

Tip: Start your story with primero, build with luego/después, add surprise with de repente, and close with al final or por fin.

자주 하는 실수

~~Después de llegamos, comimos.~~
Después de llegar, comimos.
After después de, use the infinitive (llegar), not a conjugated verb (llegamos).
~~Entonces yo primero comí.~~
Primero comí, y entonces salí.
Primero should come at the beginning of the sequence. Entonces introduces a consequence, not the first action.
~~De repente yo caminé al parque.~~
De repente empezó a llover.
De repente introduces something unexpected or sudden, not a planned action like walking to the park.
~~Luego de repente después fui a casa.~~
Luego fui a casa.
Do not stack multiple connectors together. Use one connector per event.
~~Al final por fin llegué.~~
Por fin llegué. / Al final llegué.
Al final and por fin are redundant together. Use one: por fin for relief, al final for a neutral conclusion.
