Poder and saber + infinitive
In Spanish, two verbs translate "can" or "to be able to", but they have different meanings:
- Poder expresses physical ability or possibility. It refers to being able to do something at a given moment.
- Saber expresses a learned skill or know-how.
Example: *¿Sabes nadar?* — Do you know how to swim? (learned skill)
Example: *No puedo correr hoy, me duele la pierna.* — I can't run today, my leg hurts. (physical ability)
Jugar a, hacer, and practicar + sport
In Spanish, the verb you use depends on the type of sport:
- Jugar a + ball sports or team sports: *Juego al fútbol.* (I play football.)
- Hacer + physical or sporting activities: *Hago ciclismo.* (I do cycling.)
- Practicar + any sport (more formal): *Practico la natación.* (I practise swimming.)
Example: *Jugamos al tenis los sábados.* — We play tennis on Saturdays.
Example: *Mi hermano hace natación tres veces por semana.* — My brother does swimming three times a week.
Important: with *jugar*, you always use the preposition a followed by the article: *jugar al fútbol*, *jugar al baloncesto*. Never say *juego fútbol*.
