The imperative for recipes

In Spanish recipes, you use the informal imperative (tú form) to give instructions. For regular verbs:

  • -ar verbs: drop -ar, add -a → mezclar → mezcla (mix)
  • -er verbs: drop -er, add -e → remover → remueve (stir)
  • -ir verbs: drop -ir, add -e → hervir → hierve (boil)

Example: "Añade sal y pimienta." → "Add salt and pepper."

Example: "Mezcla los ingredientes." → "Mix the ingredients."

Sequencers

To order the steps of a recipe, Spanish uses sequencing words:

  • Primero → First
  • Luego / Después → Then / Next
  • A continuación → Next / After that
  • Por último / Finalmente → Finally

Example: "Primero, pela las patatas. Luego, córtalas en trozos." → "First, peel the potatoes. Then, cut them into pieces."

Note that when a pronoun is added to an imperative, the stress may need an accent: cortacórtalas (cut them).

Recipes use the imperative, not the infinitive, when addressing the reader directly.

Hierve el agua y sírvelo caliente

Both verbs must be in the same form. Do not mix imperative and infinitive.

When a pronoun is attached to the imperative, an accent is needed to keep the original stress.

  • Primero mezcla, segundo corta
    Primero mezcla, luego corta

Segundo is not used as a recipe sequencer. Use luego or después instead.

  • Añade una piza de sal
    Añade una pizca de sal

The word is pizca (pinch), not piza.
