Me gusta / No me gusta / Me encanta / Odio

In Spanish, to express likes and dislikes, you use a special construction with gustar and encantar. The verb agrees with the thing liked, not with the person:

With a singular noun or infinitive:

  • Me gusta el chocolate. → I like chocolate.
  • Me gusta cocinar. → I like cooking.

With a plural noun:

  • Me gustan las frutas. → I like fruits.

The full scale of preferences

  • Me encanta(n) → I love — *Me encanta el helado.* (I love ice cream.)
  • Me gusta(n) mucho → I really like — *Me gustan mucho las tapas.* (I really like tapas.)
  • Me gusta(n) → I like — *Me gusta el café.* (I like coffee.)
  • No me gusta(n) → I don't like — *No me gusta el pescado.* (I don't like fish.)
  • Odio → I hate — *Odio la comida picante.* (I hate spicy food.)

With an infinitive

You can also use these verbs with an infinitive:

  • *Me gusta cocinar.* → I like to cook.
  • *Me encanta probar comida nueva.* → I love to try new food.
  • *Odio esperar en el restaurante.* → I hate waiting at the restaurant.

Example: "¿Te gusta la paella?" — "Sí, me encanta. Pero no me gusta el pescado crudo."

→ "Do you like paella?" — "Yes, I love it. But I don't like raw fish."

자주 하는 실수

  • Yo gusto el chocolate
    Me gusta el chocolate

Gustar does not work like English like; the subject is the thing liked, and the person is an indirect object

  • Me gusta las tapas
    Me gustan las tapas

With plural nouns, gustar must be in plural form: gustan

  • Me gusta de cocinar
    Me gusta cocinar

After gustar, use the infinitive directly without de

  • Yo encanto la paella
    Me encanta la paella

Encantar works like gustar: the thing loved is the subject

  • Mi favorito comida es la pizza
Mi comida favorita es la pizza

In Spanish, adjectives follow the noun and agree in gender: comida favorita

  • Prefiero el chocolate que la vainilla
Prefiero el chocolate a la vainilla

Preferir uses a (not que) to introduce the second option: preferir X a Y
