Translating the Untranslatable

Russian has a category of words that resist direct translation — they encode uniquely Russian cultural concepts, emotional states, and worldviews.

Тоска — The Quintessential Russian Feeling

Vladimir Nabokov wrote: «No single word in English renders all the shades of тоска.» It can mean:

  • A vague but deep longing for something absent
  • Spiritual anguish without a specific cause
  • Boredom tinged with sadness
  • The grief of someone far from home

Авось — Russian Fatalism

Авось expresses a uniquely Russian attitude: doing something risky and trusting fate. The phrase *«Авось пронесёт»* (Maybe it will blow over) encapsulates a philosophy of hopeful recklessness. There is even a famous ship named «Юнона и Авось».

Пошлость — Nabokov's Pet Hate

Nabokov spent pages trying to explain пошлость to English readers: it is not just vulgarity but a comfortable, self-satisfied banality — a bourgeois smugness about mediocrity.

Translation Strategy at C2

When encountering untranslatable words:

  • Use explanatory translation + the original word in brackets
  • Discuss the semantic field around the word
  • Acknowledge that some meaning is always lost in translation

표현

  • Меня охватила тоскаI was overcome by toska (existential longing)
  • На авось надеятьсяTo rely on luck / hope for the best
  • Это настоящая пошлостьThat is genuine poshlosty (vulgarity/banality)
  • Говорить по душамTo talk heart-to-heart / soul-to-soul
  • Широкая русская душаThe wide Russian soul (cultural phrase)
  • Надрыв достоевского герояThe emotional breakdown of a Dostoevsky hero
  • Слово непереводимо на другой языкThe word is untranslatable into another language

자주 하는 실수

  • Тоска переводится как sadness
Тоска не имеет точного перевода; ближайшие аналоги — longing, anguish, melancholy

тоска resists single-word translation; using a single English word misrepresents its depth

  • Авось значит maybe
Авось выражает фаталистическую надежду, что всё обойдётся

авось is not just maybe — it encodes a cultural attitude of trusting fate, distinct from просто может быть

  • Я чувствую тоску к дому
    Я тоскую по дому

тосковать по + dative is the correct construction; тоску к is not standard

  • Пошлость — это просто плохой вкус
Пошлость — это самодовольная банальность, не просто дурной вкус

пошлость is more specific than bad taste — it implies self-satisfied mediocrity and vulgarity

  • Переводить непереводимое слово буквально
Использовать объяснительный перевод с оригинальным словом в скобках

literal translation of culturally unique words destroys meaning; explanatory translation preserves it
