Russian has rich synonym systems where choosing the wrong word can sound odd or change the register of your speech. At C1 level, you must distinguish between near-synonyms based on context, formality, and connotation.
Register-Based Distinctions

- *Говорить* — neutral, general purpose
- *Беседовать* — formal, intellectual conversation: *Мы беседовали о литературе.*
- *Болтать* — informal, chitchat: *Болтать по телефону часами* (to chat on the phone for hours)
думать / размышлять / полагать
- *Думать* — everyday thinking: *Я думаю, что это верно.*
- *Размышлять* — deliberate reflection, often literary: *Он долго размышлял над задачей.*
- *Полагать* — formal assumption/belief: *Полагаю, что ситуация изменится.*
Intensity Gradations
страх / боязнь / ужас
- *Страх* — general fear

Key Rule: Age Words
Never use *старый* for people — it's rude. Use *пожилой* (elderly) or *в возрасте*. *Старый* is for objects: *старый дом*, *старая книга*.
