Understanding emotions in Russian
Russian has a rich vocabulary for inner states, and at B2 level you can describe emotional experiences precisely using reflexive verbs, impersonal constructions, and aspect pairs.
Impersonal constructions for feelings
Russian frequently uses dative + impersonal verb constructions:
- Мне тревожно. — I feel anxious. (lit. It is anxious to me)
- Ему было стыдно. — He felt ashamed.
- Нам радостно от этой новости. — We are glad about this news.
Aspect pairs for emotional processes
- испытывать / испытать (impf/pf) — to experience (ongoing vs one-time)
- переживать / пережить — to go through / to live through
- подавлять / подавить — to suppress
Reflexive verbs for emotional states
- злиться — to be angry (ongoing state)
- расстраиваться — to get upset
- стесняться — to feel shy / embarrassed
- радоваться — to be glad / rejoice
Talking about causes with из-за vs от
- Я расстроился из-за его слов. — I got upset because of his words. (cause with negative connotation)
- Он дрожал от радости. — He trembled with joy. (cause as source of sensation)
Tip: Use из-за for causes with a negative flavour, and от for causes that trigger physical/emotional sensations.

Я чувствую злость на него.Я злюсь на него. / Я испытываю злость по отношению к нему.Чувствую злость на is not standard. Use злиться на (reflexive verb + на + accusative) or испытывать злость по отношению к for a more formal register.
Мне тревожно за экзамен.Мне тревожно из-за экзамена.Use «из-за» (not just «за») to express the external cause of worry. «Тревожно за» is used for worrying about someone's well-being (e.g., тревожно за ребёнка), not for an exam causing anxiety.
Он расстроился от его поведения.Он расстроился из-за его поведения.Из-за is used for the cause of a negative emotional reaction. От is used for the source of a physical sensation or positive/neutral emotional state.
Я понял свои эмоции лучше.Я лучше понял свои эмоции.In Russian, adverbs like лучше typically precede the verb or the element they modify, not follow the object.
Эмоции влияют на наш здоровье.Эмоции влияют на наше здоровье.Здоровье is neuter, so the possessive pronoun must agree: наше (neuter), not наш (masculine).
Она подавляла все свои чувства внутри.Она подавляла все свои чувства.Внутри (inside) is redundant with подавлять (to suppress/repress) — suppression already implies keeping things inside.
