# Negative Imperative in Russian: Cybersecurity Warnings
Cybersecurity is full of warnings and commands. Russian makes a crucial distinction between two types of negative imperative.
Не + Imperfective Imperative = Don't (ever / in general)
Use the imperfective imperative after не for general prohibitions:
- Не открывай подозрительные ссылки. — Don't open suspicious links. (ever)
- Не используй один пароль для всех сайтов. — Don't use the same password for all sites.
- Не доверяй незнакомым письмам. — Don't trust unknown emails.
Не + Perfective Imperative = Be careful not to (specific risk)
Use the perfective imperative after не to warn about a specific, imminent mistake:
- Не открой этот файл! — Don't open that file! (right now, warning)
- Не забудь включить двухфакторную аутентификацию. — Don't forget to enable 2FA.
Important: Aspect Changes Meaning
- Не + imperfective: Не делай (general: never do) / Не открывай (don't open, ever)
- Не + perfective: Не сделай (specific: careful not to do) / Не открой (don't open it now!)
Useful Warning Patterns
- Будь осторожен/осторожна с... — Be careful with...
- Следи за безопасностью аккаунта. — Monitor your account security.

자주 하는 실수
Не открой спам-письма.Не открывай спам-письма.For a general ongoing prohibition (never do this), use не + imperfective imperative: не открывай. Не открой warns about one specific imminent action.
Не забывай обновить антивирус!Не забудь обновить антивирус!For a one-time reminder (don't forget to do this specific thing), use не + perfective: не забудь. Не забывай would mean 'don't ever forget' (habitual).
Я стал жертву мошенничества.Я стал жертвой мошенничества.After стать (to become), nouns take the instrumental case: жертвой (not accusative жертву).
Следи безопасностью аккаунта.Следи за безопасностью аккаунта.Следить (to monitor/watch) requires за + instrumental: следить за безопасностью.
Мой аккаунт взломан хакерами.Мой аккаунт взломан.When using short-form passive participles, the agent (by hackers) is expressed with the instrumental without хакерами or use: хакеры взломали мой аккаунт. Saying both is redundant.
