Modern Ethics in Portuguese

At C1 level, you need to discuss contemporary ethical dilemmas with nuance and precision. Portuguese has a rich vocabulary for moral reasoning.

Three Ethical Frameworks

Utilitarismo (Utilitarianism):

• *A ação certa é aquela que produz o maior bem para o maior número* — The right action produces the greatest good for the greatest number
• Key question: *Os fins justificam os meios?* — Do the ends justify the means?

Deontologia (Deontology):

• *Há deveres morais absolutos, independentemente das consequências* — There are absolute moral duties, regardless of consequences
• Key question: *Há ações que são intrinsecamente erradas?* — Are there actions that are intrinsically wrong?

Ética das virtudes (Virtue Ethics):

• *O importante não é o que fazemos, mas quem somos* — What matters is not what we do, but who we are
• Key question: *O que faria uma pessoa virtuosa nesta situação?* — What would a virtuous person do in this situation?

Contemporary Dilemmas

• IA e ética: *Quem é responsável quando um algoritmo toma uma decisão errada?*
• Bioética: *Até onde devemos ir na edição genética?*
• Privacidade: *A segurança justifica a vigilância em massa?*
• Justiça climática: *Quem deve pagar os custos das alterações climáticas?*
