Synonyms and Nuances in Portuguese

At C1 level, having a rich vocabulary is not enough — you need to understand the subtle differences between near-synonyms and choose the right word for each context.

Adversative Connectors: Subtle Differences

All mean "however/but" with different register and usage:

• Mas — neutral, everyday (B1-B2)
• Porém — slightly more formal, often mid-sentence
• Contudo — formal, typically at the beginning of a sentence
• Todavia — literary/academic, very formal
• Não obstante — the most formal, can also be a preposition (+ noun)

"To do/carry out": Four Shades

• Fazer — generic, informal: *Vou fazer o trabalho*
• Realizar — formal, achievement-oriented: *Realizou um feito notável*
• Efetuar — bureaucratic/technical: *Efetuar um pagamento*
• Executar — precise, planned action: *Executar uma estratégia*
• Concretizar — making abstract things real: *Concretizar um sonho*

"To think": The Spectrum

From casual to sophisticated: 1. Achar — casual opinion: *Acho que sim* 2. Pensar — neutral: *Penso que é possível* 3. Considerar — more weighing: *Considero esta hipótese viável* 4. Julgar — formal judgment: *Julgo que devemos agir* 5. Ponderar — careful deliberation: *É necessário ponderar os riscos*

The Art of Nuance

The mark of C1 is not using big words — it is choosing the right word. *Ponderar* is not always better than *pensar*; it depends on whether you want to convey careful deliberation or simple thought.
