Portuguese news headlines use two distinctive grammatical features: the passive voice and nominalisation.

Passive voice (ser + past participle):

*O ministro foi detido ontem.* — The minister was arrested yesterday.
*A lei foi aprovada pelo parlamento.* — The law was approved by parliament.

The passive is formed with ser conjugated + past participle (agreeing in gender/number). The agent uses por/pelo/pela: *foi libertado pela polícia* (was released by the police).

Nominalisation in headlines removes verbs for brevity:

*Subida do desemprego em Lisboa* — Rise in unemployment in Lisbon
*Eleição do novo presidente* — Election of the new president

These headline-style noun phrases are very common in Portuguese media.

Reading tip: Headlines often omit articles and use the present tense for recent past events: *Governo anuncia medidas* (Government announces measures — meaning it just happened).

Contract 'por + a' into 'pela' — preposition + article merge.

Past participle agrees with the subject: 'lei' is feminine → 'aprovada'.

Foram anunciadas as decisões.
Plural subject requires plural verb and participle.
~~Segundo a fontes oficiais...~~
Segundo fontes oficiais...
Headlines drop the article for brevity; if used, it must be plural: 'as fontes'.

'Incêndio' is masculine — use 'controlado' not 'controlada'.
