Emergency number: 112

In Portugal, the universal emergency number is 112 (same as the rest of Europe).

Essential emergency phrases

Socorro! — Help!
Ajude-me! — Help me!
Chame uma ambulância! — Call an ambulance!
Chame a polícia! — Call the police!
É uma emergência! — It's an emergency!
Preciso de ajuda! — I need help!

Describing what happened

Houve um acidente. → There was an accident.
Alguém está ferido. → Someone is injured.
Roubaram-me a carteira. → My wallet was stolen.
Perdi o meu passaporte. → I lost my passport.

At the emergency room

Preciso de ir às urgências. → I need to go to the ER.
É urgente! → It's urgent!
Onde é o hospital mais próximo? → Where is the nearest hospital?

Tip: In Portugal, bombeiros (firefighters) also respond to medical emergencies. The emergency number 112 connects to all services.
