Portuguese café culture is central to daily life. Here is how to order.
Polite ordering with "Queria"
Use queria (I would like) for polite requests:
- Queria um café, por favor. → I would like a coffee, please.
- Queria uma água, se faz favor. → I would like a water, please.
Coffee culture in Portugal
- uma bica — espresso (Lisbon)
- um cimbalino — espresso (Porto)
- uma meia de leite — half coffee, half milk
- um galão — milky coffee in a tall glass
- um café pingado — espresso with a drop of milk
Useful ordering phrases
- Com açúcar → With sugar
- Sem açúcar → Without sugar
- Com gelo → With ice
- Para levar → To take away
- Para aqui → For here
Tip: In Portugal, a simple "um café" always means an espresso. There is no need to specify!
