Telling Time
In Portuguese, time uses the verb ser in the 3rd person:
- É uma hora. → It's one o'clock. (singular for 1:00)
- São duas horas. → It's two o'clock. (plural for 2:00+)
For half past and quarter:
- São três e meia. → It's half past three. (3:30)
- São quatro e um quarto. → It's quarter past four. (4:15)
- São cinco menos um quarto. → It's quarter to five. (4:45)
💬 Example: "Que horas são?" → "What time is it?"
💬 Example: "São nove e meia da manhã." → "It's 9:30 in the morning."
Use da manhã (morning), da tarde (afternoon), da noite (evening/night) to clarify.

자주 하는 실수
São uma horaÉ uma hora1 o'clock is singular — use é, not são.
São doze horasÉ meio-dia / É meia-noiteFor noon and midnight, use the specific terms with é.
Às três e meia horasÀs três e meiaDon't add horas after meia — just say três e meia.
Que hora é?Que horas são?Use the plural: Que horas são? (even if asking for one time).
Na oito da manhãÀs oito da manhãUse às (at) for times, not na.
