Making Appointments in Portuguese

The Verb *Marcar* (to schedule/book)

  • Eu marco — I schedule
  • Tu marcas — You schedule
  • Ele/Ela marca — He/She schedules
  • Nós marcamos — We schedule

Quero marcar uma consulta. — I want to book an appointment.

Using *Queria* for Polite Requests

In European Portuguese, queria (imperfect of *querer*) is the polite way to make requests:

  • Queria marcar uma reunião. — I would like to schedule a meeting.
  • Queria cancelar o meu compromisso. — I would like to cancel my appointment.

This is more polite than using *quero* (I want).

Asking About Availability

  • Está disponível na terça-feira? — Are you available on Tuesday?
  • Tem hora disponível? — Do you have an available time slot?
  • A que horas posso ir? — What time can I come?
  • Pode ser às 14h? — Can it be at 2 PM?

Changing or Cancelling

  • Posso adiar para a próxima semana? — Can I postpone to next week?
  • Preciso de cancelar a consulta. — I need to cancel the appointment.
  • Posso mudar a hora? — Can I change the time?

  • Compromisso — General appointment or commitment
  • Consulta — Medical or professional appointment
  • Reunião — Meeting (work or group)

자주 하는 실수

  • Quero fazer uma consulta.
    Quero marcar uma consulta.

    Use 'marcar' (to book/schedule) for appointments, not 'fazer' (to do/make)

  • Eu sou disponível segunda-feira.
    Eu estou disponível segunda-feira.

    Use 'estar' for temporary states like availability, not 'ser'

  • Preciso cancelar a consulta.
    Preciso de cancelar a consulta.

    In European Portuguese, 'precisar' requires 'de' before an infinitive: 'preciso de + verb'

  • Posso adiar a reunião em sexta-feira?
    Posso adiar a reunião para sexta-feira?

    Use 'para' (to/for) when rescheduling to a specific day, not 'em' (in/on)

  • Queria agendar uma reunião.
    Queria marcar uma reunião.

    While 'agendar' is understood, 'marcar' is the standard European Portuguese verb for scheduling appointments
