Writing a Structured Essay in Korean
Korean argumentative essays (논설문) follow a clear structure: 서론 (introduction), 본론 (body), 결론 (conclusion). Mastering the right grammar structures is essential.
Key grammar points:
- -하여야 한다 — For stating thesis-level obligations and recommendations.
- 환경 보호를 위해 정부가 적극적으로 나서야 한다. (The government must take an active role in environmental protection.)
- -(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라 — "Not only... but also" — for adding supporting arguments.
- 이 정책은 경제적일 뿐만 아니라 환경적으로도 유익하다. (This policy is not only economical but also environmentally beneficial.)
- 그럼에도 불구하고 — "Nevertheless" — for acknowledging then refuting counterarguments.
- 반대 의견이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 정책은 필요하다. (There are opposing views. Nevertheless, this policy is necessary.)
- -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다 — For conclusion-section recommendations.
- 더 많은 연구를 진행할 필요가 있다. (There is a need for more research to be conducted.)
Essay tip: Start each body paragraph with 첫째/둘째/셋째 (first/second/third) for clear organization.
