Humor and Irony in Korean
Korean humor often relies on 반어법 (verbal irony) and 과장 (exaggeration). The particle -다니 expresses disbelief or ironic surprise: 그게 사실이라니! (You're saying that's true?!)
-잖아 softens statements while implying shared knowledge or gentle sarcasm: 그건 당연하잖아요. (That's obvious, isn't it.)
-(으)ㄹ 리가 dismisses absurdity: 그 사람이 요리를 잘할 리가 없잖아요. (There's no way that person can cook well.)
-다고요? echoes with surprise or irony: 그게 정말 좋다고요? (You're really saying that's good?)
Korean internet humor — 밈 — often plays with honorifics in unexpected contexts. Satire (풍자) is widely used in comedy shows and social media. Understanding these forms is essential for authentic cultural engagement at B2 level.
