# Grammar: -(아/어)서 — Expressing Cause and Sequence
-(아/어)서 connects two clauses to show cause/reason or sequential action. It is essential for explaining problems abroad.
For cause: "because/so"
- 여권을 분실해서 대사관에 갔어요. (I lost my passport, so I went to the embassy.)
- 아파서 응급실에 갔어요. (I was sick, so I went to the emergency room.)
For sequence: "and then"
- 신고를 하고 나서 보험 회사에 전화했어요. (I filed a report and then called the insurance company.)
Important: -(아/어)서 cannot be used with past tense endings on the first clause. Say 아파서 갔어요, NOT 아팠서 갔어요. The tense is carried only in the final verb.
자주 하는 실수
여권이 도난당해서 대사관에 신고했어요.여권을 도난당해서 대사관에 신고했어요.도난당하다 takes the object marker here, so it's 여권을, not 여권이. You 'have your passport stolen'.
여권을 분실했어서 대사관에 갔어요.여권을 분실해서 대사관에 갔어요.-(아/어)서 can't carry past tense on the first clause. Drop 었: 분실해서, not 분실했어서. Only the final verb shows tense.
응급실에 통역사를 만났어요.응급실에서 통역사를 만났어요.An action happening at a place uses 에서, not 에. 에 marks a destination/location of existence, 에서 marks where you do something.
경찰에게 도움을 요청하고 싶어.경찰에게 도움을 요청하고 싶어요.Don't mix speech levels. In polite speech keep the 요: 싶어요, not the casual 싶어.
보험 덕분에 치료비가 환불했어요.보험 덕분에 치료비가 환불됐어요.The cost gets refunded, so use 되다: 환불됐어요. 환불했어요 (하다) would mean the cost did the refunding.
