Tech Problems: Passive -되다
When talking about tech issues, Korean commonly uses the passive form with -되다 to describe what happened to a device or system.
-되다 passive (something is done / has happened)
- 연결이 끊겼어요 — the connection was cut off (lit. connection became cut)
- 파일이 삭제됐어요 — the file was deleted
- 앱이 설치됐어요 — the app was installed
- 시스템이 업데이트됐어요 — the system was updated
Compared to active:
- Active: 연결을 끊었어요 — I cut the connection
- Passive: 연결이 끊겼어요 — the connection got cut off
Describing ongoing problems:
- 화면이 계속 얼어요 — the screen keeps freezing
- 자꾸 오류가 나요 — errors keep coming up
- 인터넷이 잘 안 돼요 — the internet is not working well
Tip: When reporting a tech issue, say 어디에 문제가 있는 것 같아요 (it seems there is a problem with...) rather than making a definitive statement.
자주 하는 실수
컴퓨터에 바이러스를 생겼어요컴퓨터에 바이러스가 생겼어요생기다 (to appear) is intransitive, so the thing that appears takes 이/가, not the object marker 을/를.
시스템을 자동으로 업데이트했어요시스템이 자동으로 업데이트됐어요The system updated itself, so use the passive 업데이트되다 with subject 이/가 — not the active 하다 with object 을/를.
폰을 재시작하지만 문제가 해결됐어요폰을 재시작해서 문제가 해결됐어요-지만 means 'but'. For a cause-and-effect link (restart -> fixed), use -아서/어서.
재시작하면 해결할 거예요재시작하면 해결될 거예요The problem gets solved on its own, so use the passive 해결되다 (-될 거예요), not active 해결하다.
