# Polite debating in Korean
Disagreeing politely in Korean requires softening your language. Use 맞는 말씀이지만 (you're right, but) or 그 의견도 이해하지만 (I understand that opinion, but) before offering a counterpoint.
- 맞는 말씀이지만, 저는 다르게 생각해요. → *You're right, but I think differently.*
Use the honorific form when debating with strangers or elders: end sentences with -세요/-(으)십니까?
- 어떻게 생각하세요? → *What do you think?*
- 왜 그렇게 생각하십니까? → *Why do you think so?*
To concede a point gracefully: 그 점은 인정해요. 하지만... (I acknowledge that point. However...)
Avoid abrupt disagreement. Instead of 틀렸어요 (you're wrong), say:
- 그 부분은 조금 다른 것 같아요. → *I think that part is a bit different.*
Use 제 말씀은 (what I mean is) to clarify misunderstandings during debate.
표현

- 그 점은 인정해요I acknowledge that point
- 어떻게 생각하세요?What do you think? (polite question)
- 좀 더 설명해 주시겠어요?Could you explain a bit more?

자주 하는 실수
반론이 명확하게 설명해 주세요반론을 명확하게 설명해 주세요설명하다 takes a direct object, so 반론 needs 을/를, not the subject marker 이/가. Say 반론을.
상대방 의견을 어떻게 생각해?상대방 의견을 어떻게 생각하세요?In a debate with strangers or elders, use the honorific -세요, not casual 해. Say 생각하세요?
그 의견도 존중하니까, 저는 다르게 생각해요그 의견도 존중하지만, 저는 다르게 생각해요-니까 means 'because' and clashes here. To contrast, use -지만 ('but'): 존중하지만.
토론에 상대방을 존중해야 해요토론에서 상대방을 존중해야 해요An action happening inside a place/situation takes 에서, not 에. Say 토론에서.
