Body Parts in Korean

To say something hurts in Korean, use the pattern 이/가 아프다.

이/가 아프다 — to hurt / to be in pain:

  • 머리가 아파요 → My head hurts
  • 배가 아파요 → My stomach hurts
  • 팔이 아파요 → My arm hurts
  • 다리가 아파요 → My leg hurts

Subject particles:

  • 이 → after a consonant (팔이, 목이)
  • 가 → after a vowel (머리가, 배가, 코가)

Pointing to body parts:

  • 여기가 아파요 → It hurts here
  • 이쪽이 아파요 → This side hurts

Other useful expressions:

  • 어디가 아파요? → Where does it hurt?
  • 많이 아파요 → It hurts a lot
  • 조금 아파요 → It hurts a little
  • 안 아파요 → It doesn't hurt

표현

  • 머리가 아파요.My head hurts
  • 배가 아파요.My stomach hurts
  • 어디가 아파요?Where does it hurt?
  • 여기가 아파요.It hurts here
  • 많이 아파요.It hurts a lot
  • 팔이 아파요.My arm hurts

자주 하는 실수

  • 머리이 아파요
    머리가 아파요

머리 ends in a vowel, so use subject particle 가, not 이

  • 배을 아파요
    배가 아파요

아프다 uses subject particles 이/가 (not object particle 을/를). The body part is the subject, not the object

  • 나의 머리가 아파요
    머리가 아파요

In Korean, possessives (나의 = my) are usually omitted when context is clear

  • 팔 아파요
    팔이 아파요

Do not omit the subject particle 이/가 — it is required after the body part

  • 많이 아파 있어요
    많이 아파요

아프다 does not combine with 있어요; simply use 아파요 for the present tense
