Subject and Topic Particles
Korean uses particles after nouns to show their role in the sentence.
Topic particle 은/는:
- After a consonant: 저는 (as for me)
- After a vowel: 나는 (as for me, informal)
Subject particle 이/가:
- After a consonant: 이름이 (the name is)
- After a vowel: 제가 (I, subject)
The verb "to be" — 이에요/예요:
- After a noun ending in a consonant: 학생이에요 (I am a student)
- After a noun ending in a vowel: 의사예요 (I am a doctor)
Introducing yourself:
- 저는 [Name]이에요/예요. — I am [Name].
- 제 이름은 [Name]이에요/예요. — My name is [Name].
Note: Korean uses no subject-verb agreement — 이에요/예요 works for all persons.

자주 하는 실수
학생예요학생이에요학생 ends in a consonant — use 이에요 not 예요
저 김민준이에요저는 김민준이에요The topic particle 는 is needed after 저 in a formal introduction
나는 (formal situation)저는나는 is informal — always use 저는 in formal or polite contexts
이름 뭐예요?이름이 뭐예요?The subject particle 이 must be added after 이름 (consonant ending)
