Formal vs Informal Greetings
Korean has two main speech levels you need to know:
Formal (존댓말) — used with strangers, elders, or in professional situations:
- 안녕하세요 — Hello
- 감사합니다 — Thank you
Informal (반말) — used with close friends or younger people:
- 안녕 — Hi
- 고마워 — Thanks
Sentence endings: Korean verbs and adjectives end with particles that show politeness level. The ending -요 makes speech polite. For example:
- 반갑다 (dictionary form) → 반갑습니다 / 반가워요 (polite)
Goodbye has two forms:
- 안녕히 계세요 — said to someone who is STAYING
- 안녕히 가세요 — said to someone who is LEAVING
When meeting for the first time, use 처음 뵙겠습니다 (formal) or 반갑습니다 (polite). These are the Korean equivalents of "How do you do" and "Nice to meet you."

자주 하는 실수
안녕 (to an elder)안녕하세요안녕 is informal — use 안녕하세요 with elders or strangers

감사해 (in formal setting)감사합니다감사해 is too informal — use 감사합니다 in formal situations
