Expressing Moral Obligation and Impossibility
At B2 level, Japanese offers powerful grammar patterns to express ethical constraints and moral imperatives in business contexts.
わけにはいかない expresses that something cannot be done for moral or social reasons, not just practical ones. For example: 不正を見て見ぬふりをするわけにはいかない (We cannot turn a blind eye to fraud).
ざるを得ない means "have no choice but to," expressing reluctant obligation: 内部告発せざるを得ない (We have no choice but to blow the whistle).
と言わざるを得ない combines these patterns to mean "must say that": この行為は不正だと言わざるを得ない (We must say this act is dishonest).
べきではない expresses strong moral advice against an action: 賄賂を受け取るべきではない (One should not accept bribes).
These patterns are essential for discussing corporate governance, ethical dilemmas, and professional responsibility in Japanese business culture.
