Sequence Words and て-form Connections
When telling a story in Japanese, you need sequence words and the て-form to connect events smoothly.
Sequence words
- まず — first / to begin with
- それから — then / after that
- 次に (つぎに) — next
- 最後に (さいごに) — finally / lastly
- 突然 (とつぜん) — suddenly
The て-form for connecting actions
The て-form lets you chain multiple actions in one sentence, like "and" in English:
- 朝起きて、顔を洗って、ご飯を食べた。(I woke up, washed my face, and ate breakfast.)
The て-form follows the same consonant rules as the た-form, but with て/で instead of た/だ:
- 食べる → 食べて / 行く → 行って / 飲む → 飲んで
Putting it together
まず、駅に行って、電車に乗りました。それから、友達と会って、一緒にご飯を食べました。最後に、映画を見ました。
(First, I went to the station and took the train. Then, I met a friend and we ate together. Finally, we watched a movie.)
표현
- まず、朝起きました。Start a story with the first event
- それから、駅に行きました。Continue with the next event
- 突然、雨が降りました。Introduce a sudden event
- 最後に、家に帰りました。Conclude the story
- おもしろい話があります。Say you have an interesting story
- 信じられません！Express disbelief
자주 하는 실수
起きて、それから食べて。起きて、それから食べた。The last verb in a sequence should be in ta-form (past), not te-form
駅を行って電車に乗った。駅に行って電車に乗った。Use に for destination with 行く, not を
突然に雨が降った。突然雨が降った。突然 is used as an adverb without に
友達と会いて話した。友達と会って話した。会う te-form is 会って (u-ending verb), not 会いて
コーヒーを飲みて出かけた。コーヒーを飲んで出かけた。飲む te-form is 飲んで (mu-ending), not 飲みて
