もしもし (moshi moshi) — Hello on the Phone
もしもし is the Japanese way to say "hello" when answering or making a phone call. It is ONLY used on the phone — never face-to-face.
💬 Example: "もしもし、たなかです" → "Hello, this is Tanaka"
Polite Phone Expressions
Answering a call
- もしもし → Hello
- はい、[name]です → Yes, this is [name]
Making a call
- [name]さんは いますか？ → Is [name] there?
- [name]さんを おねがいします → May I speak to [name]?
During a call
- ちょっとまってください → Please wait a moment
- もういちど おねがいします → Could you repeat that?
- でんわばんごうを おしえてください → Please tell me your phone number
Ending a call
- しつれいします → Goodbye (polite, on phone)

こんにちは (on the phone)もしもしOn the phone, always use もしもし — not こんにちは
でんわを かけます くださいでんわを かけてくださいUse the て-form (かけて) before ください
もしもし (face to face)こんにちはもしもし is ONLY for phone — use こんにちは in person
でんわ きりますでんわを きりますDon't forget the particle を before きります (hang up)
まちって くださいまって くださいThe て-form of まつ (wait) is まって, not まちって
