Formal passive and nominalisations in professional reports

In formal Italian B2 writing, the formal passive and nominalisations replace active structures for a more distanced and professional register.

Formal passive with "venire"

*Venire* + past participle is preferred over *essere* + past participle in formal texts because it expresses an ongoing action rather than a state.

*viene raccomandato* → it is recommended
*viene implementato* → it is being implemented
*viene valutato* → it is evaluated
*si è constatato* → it has been observed

Nominalisations

Converting a passive verbal structure into a noun phrase is a hallmark of formal style.

*si è constatato che...* → *la constatazione di...*
*viene raccomandato di...* → *la raccomandazione di...*
*viene implementato* → *l'implementazione di...*
*si è valutato* → *la valutazione di...*

Examples in a report context

*Si è constatato un calo delle vendite nel terzo trimestre.*

→ A decline in sales has been observed in the third quarter. Nominalisation: *La constatazione di un calo delle vendite nel terzo trimestre.*

*Viene raccomandato di ampliare l''ambito della ricerca.*

→ It is recommended to broaden the scope of the research. Nominalisation: *La raccomandazione di ampliare l''ambito della ricerca.*

Why nominalisations matter

Nominalisations allow information to be condensed into section headings, summaries, and conclusions.

자주 하는 실수

~~Il report è stato raccomandato di implementare le misure.~~
Nel report viene raccomandato di implementare le misure.
One does not recommend 'the report' but makes a recommendation 'in the report'. The impersonal construction 'viene raccomandato' is correct.
~~Si è constatato che i risultati sono stati buoni.~~
Si è constatato che i risultati sono stati soddisfacenti.
'Buoni' is too informal for a professional report. Prefer 'soddisfacenti', 'positivi' or 'incoraggianti'.
~~La metodologia è rivelata efficace.~~
La metodologia si è rivelata efficace.
The verb 'rivelarsi' is reflexive and requires 'si'. Omitting 'si' changes the meaning entirely.
~~Le parti interessanti devono essere informate.~~
Le parti interessate devono essere informate.
'Interessanti' (interesting) and 'interessate' (concerned/stakeholder) are two different words. In the report context, it is always 'parti interessate'.
~~I dati mostrano che il trend è positivo.~~
I dati mostrano che la tendenza è positiva.
Avoid the anglicism trend: use tendenza in formal Italian.
~~In conclusione, voglio dire che...~~
In conclusione, si può affermare che...
In reports, prefer the impersonal form (si può affermare) over first person.
