The Passive Voice in Italian: Reading News Headlines

Italian news headlines very often use the passive voice (forma passiva). Recognising it is essential for understanding the news.

Passive construction: essere + participio passato

Passato prossimo passive: è stato + pp
Il sindaco è stato arrestato. *(The mayor has been arrested.)*
La legge è stata approvata. *(The law has been approved.)*
Present passive: viene + pp (or è + pp)
Il sospettato viene indagato. *(The suspect is being investigated.)*
La notizia viene diffusa. *(The news is being spread.)*
Common present passive in headlines:
viene rilasciato *(is released)*
viene condannato *(is convicted)*
viene accusato *(is accused)*

Structure of Italian headlines: Headlines often omit articles and use the historic present:

"Ministro arrestato" = "The minister has been arrested"
"Azienda chiude, 500 licenziati" = "Company closes, 500 laid off"

Common irregular past participles:

scrivere → scritto *(written)*
fare → fatto *(done)*
dire → detto *(said)*
vedere → visto *(seen)*

The past participle agrees with the subject: la legge is feminine → approvata

Past participle must agree in feminine plural (pubblicate) with le notizie

In journalistic style, use conditional (avrebbe) for reported speech
