Expressing Your Opinion in Italian
At B1 level, Italian has several key structures for giving your opinion:
Penso che... (I think that...)
- Penso che tu abbia ragione. *(I think you are right.)*
- Penso che sia una buona idea. *(I think it is a good idea.)*
- Important: penso che requires the subjunctive (congiuntivo).
Credo che... (I believe that...)
- Credo che lui venga domani. *(I believe he is coming tomorrow.)*
- Credo che la situazione sia difficile. *(I believe the situation is difficult.)*
Secondo me... (In my opinion... / According to me...)
- Secondo me, il film era noioso. *(In my opinion, the film was boring.)*
- Secondo me, dovremmo aspettare. *(In my opinion, we should wait.)*
- This structure is followed by the indicative — much simpler!
A mio avviso... (In my view...)
- A mio avviso, questa è la soluzione migliore. *(In my view, this is the best solution.)*
- More formal than *secondo me*, mostly used in writing.
Key rule: After *penso che* and *credo che*, use the present subjunctive. After *secondo me* and *a mio avviso*, use the indicative.
