Stare + gerund and giving advice

Stare + gerund (ongoing action)

In Italian, to express that an action is happening right now, use stare conjugated + gerund.

Forming the gerund:

-are verbs: stem + -ando → imparare → imparando
-ere verbs: stem + -endo → scrivere → scrivendo
-ire verbs: stem + -endo → dormire → dormendo

Conjugation of stare: io sto, tu stai, lui/lei sta, noi stiamo, voi state, loro stanno

Examples:

*Sto imparando l'italiano.* — I am learning Italian.
*Stiamo migliorando la pronuncia.* — We are improving our pronunciation.
*Sta leggendo un libro italiano.* — He/She is reading an Italian book.
*State guardando un film?* — Are you (plural) watching a film?

Important: Unlike English, the Italian progressive (stare + gerund) is only used for actions happening at this very moment. For habitual actions, use the simple present: *Studio l'italiano ogni giorno.* (I study Italian every day.)

Dovresti + infinitive (advice)

To give advice in Italian, use dovresti (you should) + infinitive. This is the conditional form of *dovere*.

*Dovresti ripetere ogni giorno.* — You should repeat every day.
*Dovresti esercitarti di più.* — You should practise more.
*Dovresti ascoltare podcast italiani.* — You should listen to Italian podcasts.
*Non dovresti aver paura di sbagliare.* — You should not be afraid of making mistakes.

Esempio: "Sto migliorando, ma dovresti allenarti ogni giorno per diventare fluente." — "I'm improving, but you should train every day to become fluent."
