What time is it?

Telling the Time in Italian

To ask the time: Che ore sono? or Che ora è?

Answering — whole hours:

The verb changes between singular (è) and plural (sono):

• È l'una → It is one o'clock (singular — the only one!)
• Sono le due / tre / quattro... → It is two / three / four o'clock (plural)

Fractions of the hour:

• e mezzo/a → half past : Sono le tre e mezzo. (It's 3:30.)
• e un quarto → quarter past : Sono le due e un quarto. (It's 2:15.)
• meno un quarto → quarter to : Sono le quattro meno un quarto. (It's 3:45.)
• e cinque / e dieci → five / ten past : Sono le sei e dieci. (It's 6:10.)
• meno cinque / meno dieci → five / ten to : Sono le otto meno cinque. (It's 7:55.)

Special times of day:

• È mezzogiorno → It is noon (12:00)
• È mezzanotte → It is midnight (00:00)

Specifying AM/PM:

• di mattina → in the morning (AM)
• del pomeriggio → in the afternoon (PM)
• di sera → in the evening
• di notte → at night

Italy also commonly uses the 24-hour clock: le quindici (15:00), le venti (20:00).
