Formal vs Informal Hindi: Register Switching
Hindi operates across a wide stylistic spectrum. Understanding when to use शुद्ध हिन्दी (pure Hindi) versus बोलचाल की हिन्दी (colloquial Hindi) is essential for C1 speakers.
Formal register features:
- Use of तत्सम vocabulary (Sanskrit origin): e.g., जल (water), अग्नि (fire), मातृभाषा (mother tongue)
- Complex participial constructions and compound verbs
- Avoidance of Urdu/English loanwords in official contexts
- Passive constructions: किया जाता है instead of करते हैं
Informal register features:
- तद्भव words (Sanskrit-derived but phonologically simplified): पानी, आग, माँ
- Perso-Arabic loanwords: किताब, दरवाज़ा, वक़्त
