Understanding Contracts in Hindi
Legal Hindi uses highly formal Sanskrit-derived vocabulary. At B2 level, you should understand key contract terms:
Key legal phrases:
- नियम एवं शर्तें (niyam evam sharten) — terms and conditions
- अनुबंध की अवधि (anubandh kee avadhi) — duration of the contract
- पक्षकार (pakshkaar) — party (to a contract)
Passive constructions in legal language:
- यह अनुबंध लागू किया जाएगा (yah anubandh laagoo kiyaa jaayegaa) — "this contract shall be enforced"
- शर्तों का पालन किया जाना चाहिए (sharton kaa paalan kiyaa jaanaa chaahiye) — "the conditions must be complied with"
Obligation and permission:
- अनिवार्य है (anivaary hai) — "is mandatory"
- अनुमति दी जाती है (anumati dee jaatee hai) — "permission is granted"
- निषिद्ध है (nishiddh hai) — "is prohibited"
Example: इस अनुबंध के उल्लंघन पर दोनों पक्षकारों को मुआवज़े का अधिकार होगा।
(is anubandh ke ullanghan par donon pakshkaaron ko muaavze kaa adhikaar hogaa.)
"In case of breach of this contract, both parties shall have the right to compensation."
