The Causative: Having Something Done
In Hindi, the causative construction lets you express having someone else do something for you.
How it works:
- Add -वाना to the verb root: रंगना → रंगवाना, धोना → धुलवाना
- The subject uses ने (like past perfective)
- The doer of the action takes से
Examples:
- मैंने दीवारें रंगवाईं। — I had the walls painted.
- मैंने प्लम्बर से नल ठीक करवाया। — I had the plumber fix the tap.
- हमने कमरे साफ करवाए। — We had the rooms cleaned.
Gender agreement: The verb agrees with the object (if no ने on object):
- दीवारें (f. pl.) → रंगवाईं
- कमरे (m. pl.) → करवाए
Use this pattern whenever you arrange for a service — painting, repairs, cleaning — rather than doing it yourself.

- मकान मालिक से बात करनी होगी।I'll need to talk to the landlord.
- मैंने पेंटर से दीवारें रंगवाई हैं।I've had the walls painted by a painter.
- चाबी कब मिलेगी?When will I get the key?
- बिजली और पानी का इंतज़ाम हो गया।Electricity and water have been arranged.

자주 하는 실수
मैं दीवारें रंगवाया।मैंने दीवारें रंगवाईं।Causative past needs ने on subject, and verb agrees with feminine plural object दीवारें.
मैंने प्लम्बर को नल ठीक करवाया।मैंने प्लम्बर से नल ठीक करवाया।The agent in a causative sentence takes से, not को.
मैंने कमरा साफ करवाई।मैंने कमरा साफ करवाया।कमरा is masculine singular, so the verb ending is -या not -ई.
