Public Transport in Hindi
India has rich public transport options. Here is how to talk about them.
Key question: Which transport to take?
- कौन सी बस जाती है? (kaun si bas jaati hai?) — Which bus goes there?
- ट्रेन कब आती है? (train kab aati hai?) — When does the train come?
- अगला स्टेशन कौन सा है? (agla station kaun sa hai?) — What is the next station?
Getting on and off
- बस में चढ़िए (bas mein charhiye) — Get on the bus
- यहाँ उतरिए (yahaan utariye) — Get off here
- अगले स्टॉप पर रुकिए (agle stop par rukiye) — Stop at the next stop
Verb patterns
Hindi transport verbs follow SOV order:
- मैं बस से जाता हूँ। (main bas se jaata hoon.) — I go by bus. (m)
- मैं मेट्रो से जाती हूँ। (main metro se jaati hoon.) — I go by metro. (f)
से (se) is the postposition for means of transport — like "by" in English.
Auto-rickshaw
The ऑटो (auto) is iconic in Indian cities. To hail one:
- ऑटो! चलेंगे? (auto! chalenge?) — Auto! Will you go?
- [destination] चलोगे? ([destination] chaloge?) — Will you go to [destination]?

- यह बस कहाँ जाती है?Where does this bus go?
- मुझे [station] जाना है।I need to go to [station].
- अगली ट्रेन कब है?When is the next train?
- यहाँ उतरना है।I need to get off here.
- टिकट कहाँ मिलेगा?Where can I get a ticket?
자주 하는 실수
मैं बस जाता हूँमैं बस से जाता हूँUse se (से) after the transport noun to mean by bus, by train, etc. Omitting se changes the meaning.
ट्रेन आता हैट्रेन आती हैट्रेन is feminine, so the verb must agree: aati hai, not aata hai.
अगला स्टॉप में उतरोअगले स्टॉप पर उतरोUse par (पर) for locations and stops, not mein (में). Also adjective agla changes to agle before an oblique noun.
