German cleft sentences (Spaltsätze) allow you to emphasize a specific element by restructuring the sentence. This is a powerful C1 tool for adding focus.
Es ist/war... der/die/das (It is/was... who/that):
- *Es war Hans, der das Problem gelöst hat.* (It was Hans who solved the problem.)
- *Es ist die Qualität, die zählt.* (It is the quality that counts.)
Was... ist/war (What... is/was):
- *Was mich stört, ist die Unehrlichkeit.* (What bothers me is the dishonesty.)
- *Was wir brauchen, ist mehr Zeit.* (What we need is more time.)
Adverb fronting for emphasis:
- *Gerade dieses Thema ist besonders wichtig.* (It is precisely this topic that is especially important.)
- *Ausgerechnet heute regnet es.* (Of all days, it rains today.)
These structures shift the reader's attention to the most important part of the message, making your German more precise and impactful.
