Hedging (Abschwächung) is the academic practice of softening claims to show caution and intellectual honesty. German academic writing uses specific hedging strategies.

Modal verbs for hedging:

*Dies könnte darauf hindeuten, dass...* (This could indicate that...)
*Die Ergebnisse dürften relevant sein.* (The results are likely relevant.)

Hedging adverbs:

*möglicherweise* (possibly), *vermutlich* (presumably), *wohl* (probably)
*Die Studie zeigt möglicherweise einen Zusammenhang.* (The study possibly shows a connection.)

Impersonal constructions:

*Es scheint, dass...* (It seems that...)
*Es lässt sich argumentieren, dass...* (It can be argued that...)
*Man könnte einwenden, dass...* (One could object that...)

Cautious verbs:

*nahelegen* (to suggest), *hindeuten auf* (to point to), *andeuten* (to hint at)

Hedging distinguishes confident but cautious academic writing from unsubstantiated claims.
