Writing a structured essay (Erörterung) in German follows a clear three-part structure.
1. Einleitung (Introduction):
- State the topic: *Im Folgenden wird die Frage erörtert, ob...* (The following discusses the question of whether...)
- Provide context: *In der heutigen Gesellschaft...* (In today's society...)
2. Hauptteil (Body):
- Pro arguments: *Einerseits... / Zunächst einmal... / Ein weiteres Argument ist...*
- Contra arguments: *Andererseits... / Dagegen spricht... / Kritiker argumentieren...*
- Transitions: *Darüber hinaus... / Außerdem... / Hinzu kommt, dass...*
3. Fazit (Conclusion):
- *Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass...* (In summary, it can be said that...)
- *Abschließend möchte ich betonen, dass...* (In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that...)
Key connectors for essays:
- *einerseits... andererseits* (on the one hand... on the other hand)
- *zwar... aber* (indeed... but)
- *nichtsdestotrotz* (nevertheless)
- *infolgedessen* (as a result)
The essay structure requires impersonal constructions and passive voice for academic objectivity.

자주 하는 실수

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen dass...Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass...Lässt sich sagen is more formal. Also: comma required before dass.
