Business ethics in German involves expressing moral judgments using specific evaluative structures.
Moral expressions (Es ist + adjective + dass):
- *Es ist inakzeptabel, dass Kinder arbeiten müssen.* (It is unacceptable that children have to work.)
- *Es ist unverantwortlich, dass die Firma so handelt.* (It is irresponsible for the company to act this way.)
Expressing obligation and duty:
- *Man sollte darauf achten, dass...* (One should ensure that...)
- *Es liegt in unserer Verantwortung, dass...* (It is our responsibility that...)
- *Wir sind verpflichtet, fair zu handeln.* (We are obligated to act fairly.)
Expressing outrage or disapproval:
- *Es ist nicht hinnehmbar, dass...* (It is not acceptable that...)
- *Es kann nicht sein, dass...* (It cannot be that...)
Key pattern: After *Es ist + adjective*, the subordinate clause uses *dass* with the verb at the end. This formal structure is common in ethical discussions and professional contexts.
