Relative clauses (Relativsätze) let you add information about a noun. The relative pronoun must match the gender and number of the noun it refers to, while its case depends on its role in the relative clause.

Nominative relative pronouns:

  • der (masculine): *Der Mann, der viel postet, ist mein Freund.* (The man who posts a lot is my friend.)
  • die (feminine): *Die Frau, die das Foto geteilt hat, ist Journalistin.* (The woman who shared the photo is a journalist.)
  • das (neuter): *Das Kind, das Videos schaut, ist müde.* (The child that watches videos is tired.)
  • die (plural): *Die Leute, die online sind, wissen alles.* (The people who are online know everything.)

Key rules:

  • The relative clause is set off by commas
  • The verb goes to the end of the relative clause
  • The relative pronoun comes right after the comma

*Die App, die am beliebtesten ist, hat Millionen Nutzer.* (The app that is most popular has millions of users.)
