Relative clauses (Relativsätze) let you add information about a noun. The relative pronoun must match the gender and number of the noun it refers to, while its case depends on its role in the relative clause.
Nominative relative pronouns:
- der (masculine): *Der Mann, der viel postet, ist mein Freund.* (The man who posts a lot is my friend.)
- die (feminine): *Die Frau, die das Foto geteilt hat, ist Journalistin.* (The woman who shared the photo is a journalist.)
- das (neuter): *Das Kind, das Videos schaut, ist müde.* (The child that watches videos is tired.)
- die (plural): *Die Leute, die online sind, wissen alles.* (The people who are online know everything.)
Key rules:
- The relative clause is set off by commas
- The verb goes to the end of the relative clause
- The relative pronoun comes right after the comma
*Die App, die am beliebtesten ist, hat Millionen Nutzer.* (The app that is most popular has millions of users.)

Die Leute die online sind...Die Leute, die online sind...Relative clauses must be separated by commas in German.
Das Kind, das Videos schaut ist müde.Das Kind, das Videos schaut, ist müde.You need a closing comma after the relative clause.
Die App, die ist am beliebtesten...Die App, die am beliebtesten ist...In relative clauses, the verb goes to the end.
