On the phone in Germany, specific formulas are used:
To answer:
- Hallo, hier ist Schmidt. (Hello, this is Schmidt.)
- Schmidt am Apparat. (Schmidt speaking.)
To ask to speak to someone:
- Könnte ich bitte mit Frau Müller sprechen? (Could I speak to Mrs. Müller?)
- Ist Herr Weber da? (Is Mr. Weber there?)
Könnten Sie (could you) is the polite form of können:
- Könnten Sie bitte langsamer sprechen? (Could you speak more slowly?)
- Könnten Sie das wiederholen? (Could you repeat that?)
- Könnten Sie ihm eine Nachricht hinterlassen? (Could you leave him a message?)
To end a call:
- Auf Wiederhören! (Goodbye! — on the phone)
- Vielen Dank für Ihren Anruf. (Thank you for your call.)
Note: On the phone, you say Auf Wiederhören (goodbye for hearing), not Auf Wiedersehen.
