Cultural Equivalences in Translation

Translation is never word-for-word. A skilled translator finds cultural equivalences:

"It's raining cats and dogs" → Il pleut des cordes (not "il pleut des chats et des chiens")

Domestication vs. Foreignisation

Two opposing strategies:

Domestiquer: Adapt everything to the target culture (readers feel at home)
Dépayser: Keep foreign elements visible (readers experience otherness)

Localisation Strategies

Beyond language, localisation adapts: currency, dates, humour, cultural references. A C2 speaker understands that le registre must match the target audience's expectations.
