Literary Inversions
In elevated French, subject-verb inversion creates a refined, literary tone. This is common after certain adverbs and in reported speech.
Rarement a-t-on vu une telle éloquence. — Rarely has one seen such eloquence.
Peut-être faudrait-il reconsidérer. — Perhaps one should reconsider.
The Subjunctive in Formal Register
Formal French uses the subjunctive extensively, especially with expressions of fear, doubt, and concession:
De crainte qu'il ne parte, nous avons agi. — For fear that he might leave, we acted.
Quoi qu'il en soit, la décision est prise. — Whatever the case may be, the decision is made.
Archaisms in Context
Certain archaic forms survive in legal, diplomatic, and literary French:
Par la présente, je vous informe... — Hereby, I inform you...
Nonobstant les difficultés... — Notwithstanding the difficulties...
These forms signal mastery of register and are expected in formal writing.
