Regional Linguistic Variation

French varies enormously across regions:

Southern French: final consonants pronounced, nasal vowels differ
Québécois: distinct vocabulary (char = car), preserved archaisms
Belgian French: septante (70), nonante (90) instead of soixante-dix, quatre-vingt-dix
Swiss French: similar to Belgian in numbers

Sociolects and Idiolects

Sociolecte: Language variety tied to social group (youth slang, professional jargon)
Idiolecte: Individual speech patterns unique to each person

Prestige and Stigma

The "standard" Parisian French carries prestige, while regional accents may face stigma. Understanding this sociolinguistic reality is essential at C2 level.
