At C1 level, mastering register switching is essential. French distinguishes three main registers: *soutenu* (formal/literary), *courant* (standard), and *familier* (informal/colloquial).
Formal inversions (registre soutenu):
- *Rarement voit-on une telle situation.* (Rarely does one see such a situation.)
- *Non seulement a-t-il réussi, mais il a excellé.* (Not only did he succeed, but he excelled.)
- *À peine était-il arrivé qu'il repartit.* (He had barely arrived when he left again.)
Standard vs Formal comparison:
- Courant: *On ne voit pas ça souvent.* → Soutenu: *Rarement observe-t-on cela.*
- Courant: *Il a aussi gagné le prix.* → Soutenu: *De surcroît, il a remporté le prix.*
Key principle: The formal register uses subject-verb inversion after adverbs like *rarement*, *à peine*, *non seulement*, and *peut-être*. This mirrors literary and administrative French, essential for professional and academic contexts.
