French uses cleft sentences (*phrases clivées*) to emphasize specific elements. This advanced structure draws attention to what matters most in a sentence.
C'est... qui/que (cleft sentences):
- *C'est Pierre qui a trouvé la solution.* (It's Pierre who found the solution.)
- *C'est ce livre que je cherchais.* (It's this book that I was looking for.)
- *C'est à Paris que nous nous sommes rencontrés.* (It was in Paris that we met.)
Ce qui/Ce que... c'est (pseudo-cleft):
- *Ce que je veux, c'est la paix.* (What I want is peace.)
- *Ce qui m'inquiète, c'est le résultat.* (What worries me is the result.)
- *Ce dont il a besoin, c'est du temps.* (What he needs is time.)
Emphasis adverbs for focus:
- *Notamment* and *en particulier* highlight specific items
- *Surtout* and *avant tout* signal priority
- *Justement* and *précisément* add exactness
These structures are essential for sophisticated argumentation and emphasis in formal French.
